PHYSIOTHERAPY

WHO CAN BE HELPED WITH PHYSIOTHERAPY?
I have experience in treating a wide range of musculoskeletal problems, injuries & conditions. These include those that result from everyday life, affecting your ability to lead the kind of life you enjoy in comfort. Or those that prevent you from working or participating in sport. I also work with clients who have other pre-existing conditions, possibly diagnosed previously by their doctor, for which they need further help with symptoms or problems.
Together we look at the problems/symptoms that are concerning you & I propose proven and effective treatments. Alongside this, I will be advising you regarding what lifestyle changes and exercises you need, in order to help you take charge of your life again and work towards preventing these problems from affecting the rest of your life!
WHAT HAPPENS DURING AN ASSESSMENT?
Initially there is an assessment consultation, which is split into three sections:
(i) Talking through your present problems and symptoms, and learning what your goals, needs and expectations are from Physiotherapy.
(ii) Noting any medical history or injuries that you may have. These can impact on your present issues, or influence the approach to treatment.
(ii) A thorough 'hands-on' assessment of the joints, muscles and nerves is then conducted. This will be related to the areas where you are having pain etc, but also to surrounding structures, postures, movement patterns that may cause pain in those areas.
Following this, I will talk you through what I have found, what that means and finally, perhaps most importantly, what we are going to be able to do about it in the treatment!
WHAT DO I NEED TO DO AFTER THE ASSESSMENT?
Without realising it, our habits, posture, work activities and even how you sleep & watch TV can all be a 'repetitive strain' on your body. This means we have to work together to really make a lasting difference to your symptoms & reduce the likelihood of the symptoms recurring. Your involvement takes many forms, and is often really simple when you know how!
Exercises - You will be set exercises tailored to your specific problems and symptoms. Your recovery will rely partly on you following these instructions fully. You will be sent an app by email, this contains your bespoke exercise program with a detailed written description of the exercises with tips and watchpoints, and videos demonstrations.
FOLLOW UP TREATMENTS
At the end of your first assessment /treatment, I will explain to you the number and frequency of follow up treatments that you ideally should have. This can vary with each person, and depends on the severity of their condition, & how well they act on advice and exercises given. Occasionally there are issues that emerge later in treatment sessions - where appropriate these may lead to referral to another specialist practionner or profession e.g. Podiatrist, GPs.
Follow up consultations will include:
* Checking how your symptoms have been
* Going through the exercises you were set & teaching any new additions and progressions
* Troubleshooting - e.g. did the advice help, establishing new habits, problems of motivation, adapting work practises etc.
* Manual treatment as required using gentle but effective techniques
WHAT DO I NEED TO BRING OR WEAR TO PHYSIOTHERAPY?
You will be asked to undress to underwear, in order to show the affected area. You can bring shorts, for lower body and spine issues. You may be asked to show the joints surrounding the symptomatic area. I will explain why this is necessary, but please do ask if you feel uncomfortable at any point. You are welcome to bring a chaperone if you would prefer to do so.
